Gold to crypto FAQ
How many ounces of gold does it take to buy one Bitcoin?
Divide the current Bitcoin price in US dollars by the gold spot price per troy ounce. The result is how many troy ounces of pure gold are worth the same as one Bitcoin. To see it in the converter, press the swap button, enter 1 Bitcoin and choose Gold, Troy oz and .9999 fine purity: the large result is how many troy ounces of gold one Bitcoin buys. Both prices move constantly, so the number changes from minute to minute.
What does the gold/BTC ratio mean?
The gold/BTC ratio compares the two assets directly. It is the number of troy ounces of gold that one Bitcoin is worth. When the ratio rises, Bitcoin has gained on gold, and when it falls, gold has gained on Bitcoin, whatever either one did in dollars. It measures relative value only and does not predict which way either asset will go.
Where do the prices come from and how often do they update?
Crypto prices come from CoinGecko. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium spot prices come from metals.live, with Stooq as a backup. The page loads fresh prices when it opens and again every 60 seconds, and the Prices tab has a refresh button. If the live sources cannot be reached, the converter shows built-in estimates marked "Estimated" instead of "Live", and coins the live feed does not cover also use a stored estimate.
What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?
Precious metals are priced per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams. A regular (avoirdupois) ounce, the kind used on kitchen and postal scales, is about 28.35 grams, so a troy ounce is roughly 10% heavier. The converter works in troy ounces and also accepts grams, kilograms, pennyweight (dwt) and pounds. Its Pounds option is a regular pound, which is about 14.58 troy ounces.
Can I convert silver, platinum or palladium to crypto?
Yes. Besides gold, you can convert silver, platinum and palladium to or from any coin in the list, which includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins such as Tether and USD Coin, and dozens of other cryptocurrencies. Press the swap button to go the other way and see how much metal a crypto amount buys. Other metals, such as copper or rhodium, are not supported.
Does the result include dealer premiums or exchange fees?
No. The result is a plain spot conversion: the pure metal content (weight × purity) times the spot price, divided by the coin's market price. It leaves out dealer premiums on coins and bars, the spread a dealer takes when buying metal back, exchange and network fees, and taxes. A real trade will usually get you somewhat less than the figure shown, so use it as a reference when comparing quotes.
